The material looks velvet but feels only slightly velvety compared to a microfiber material, although it's not rough. I don't like the decorative stitching that cuts across in 4-squares around which will put a mark on propped bare feet. Overall, it looks big and bulky so you can safely place on top a bar tray with several cups of coffee or glasses of wine. Since I have a good size area for a family room where it resides and my sole purpose in buying is to use it to prop my feet while on the couch, it is acceptable. As to cost, it is a bit pricey for the material and overall look, however, it was on clearance and discounted. Also, I'm averse to returning a bulky item plus return shipping which is not worth the hassle and additional cost, so I'm keeping this Surya Obsidian OBPF-004 Pouf. This Pouf still blends well with the other high quality stuff in the family room so it's overall not-so-great look and quality is tempered. Anyway, it's for my feet, remember?
